Why
the name ZION?
There is a stone plaque
embedded into the brickwork on the front of the building, with the
word ‘
ZION
’ in it. It is painted white and if you look carefully, you may
just be able to see either end of it. You can’t make out the word
Zion
, as it is covered by the apex of the front extension. We are not
sure when the plaque was put there. It may have been inserted when
the building was erected or even added later. People that have lived
in the area of
Stanley
for a number of years have always known the church building as
ZION
, so when we moved in we decided to use the name.
What
does it mean?
The word ‘
Zion
’ is taken from the Old Testament in the
Bible, and there are numerous verses where it is mentioned. It is
used to describe ‘The city of
David
,
Jerusalem
, the
Holy
Mountain
’, etc. They were so called because it was where ‘God dwelt’
or the ‘Presence of God’ was. This was due to the Ark of the
Covenant being there when King
Solomon built the
Temple
in
Jerusalem
to replace the temporary
arrangement of the Tabernacle
.

Today, we do not
believe that God lives in the building, but in the lives of those
who believe and accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Please go to Who's
Jesus for more information on this.
